Description
The lightest mortar – grantenwerfer – in use in the German Army was the 50mm infantry mortar. It was basically a close-range support weapon that could be easily carried and used by infantry and was used in almost every early stage engagement.
As the war progressed the 50mm mortar was replaced by the 80mm mortar in the same role, however it could still be found in the hands of garrison troops and reservists.
